DISCUSS THE CALL TO ACTION

Excellence Redefined
As Christ followers, we are called to live a life of excellence. Excellence, however, is often misunderstood as our culture has defined it purely as outward appearance and results at all cost. It is time for excellence to be redefined.

Read

Matthew 25: 14-29

Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.   To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.   The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more.   So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more.  But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.   The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?   Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

“‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags.   For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

Main Idea

There is confusion over what excellence is and what it is not.

         – Excellence is not about pure results and performance / it’s about an attitude to achieve results the right way.

         – Excellence is not about earning the love of Christ / it’s about reflecting the love of Christ in practical ways.

         – Excellence is not perfection / Excellence always leaves room for growth

         – Excellence is not arrogant (I’ve arrived) / It’s humble (there’s always room for improvement)

         – Excellence is not about arriving at an endpoint / it’s about who you are and who you become along the way.

There is a need for excellence in our personal lives because it is the proof that we can grow past our current circumstances and limitations and fulfill our potential.  We can never underestimate the people in our circle of influence who so desperately need to see a spirit of excellence in our marriages, our friendships, our work ethics, and in everything we set our hearts to.  As we continue to strive for excellence, we can show others around us how Godly growth can take place and inspire them to strive for a spirit of excellence as well.  When we do this, we can say that Excellence is My Spirit.

EXCELLENCE IS MY SPIRIT BECAUSE EXCELLENCE IS EXPECTED (the master of those servants returned and settled accounts)
In the story that Christ shared, there came a moment where the master of the house came back from his trip and settled accounts with his servants he entrusted his wealth to. More than just pure results, he was following up to see if they handled his money with excellence. There was an expectation placed on them to handle what he entrusted to them the right way. Before salvation, Christ leads us along a path where he reveals our need for a savior and His work on the cross. After that moment, Christ then begins to place purpose in our lives and begins to set expectations for excellence so we can reach our full potential. These expectations are not pure performance based and have absolutely nothing to do with the love Christ has for us. With this in mind, Christ makes no apologies for setting a standard of excellence for our lives and works in us and through us to grow.

Question for group

What areas in your life currently is a spirit of excellence expected? How are efforts to meet this excellence growing and stretching you?

EXCELLENCE IS MY SPIRIT BECAUSE WHAT I DO WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS LOOKING MATTERS (Then he went on his journey)
The majority of this story takes place when the master isn’t looking. The servants were expected to work and manage what he entrusted to them without him hovering over them. This principle is true for us as who we are and what we do when no one else is looking matters. So often, Christ will introduce a test of faith in our lives by seeing how we perform and how we act when no one else is hovering over us and following up. Who we are when no one else is looking is who we really are. The people of God are expected to be hard working and faithful even when eyes aren’t on them.

Question for group

How do our mundane work routines change with this principle in mind? How does our attitude change toward purely looking at the outward appearance of people?

EXCELLENCE IS MY SPIRIT BECAUSE IT’S LESS ABOUT HOW I START AND MORE ABOUT HOW I FINISH (To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag)
On the surface, it seems unfair that the master didn’t distribute his wealth evenly among his servants. But him doing this spoke less about his fairness in generosity and more about him wanting to see what was truly in the hearts of his servants. The same is true for us today. All of us have areas where we feel others have been given a head start and have more resources than us. While not ignoring this reality, we can never allow our lack to become an excuse for inaction. With what we have, we are to take action on now and be faithful with. We cannot afford to wait until our circumstances are different or until we have “more” in order to get started. We must get our eyes off of people and instead make up our minds to be excellent with what we have, trusting that what matters most to Christ is how we finish instead of how we start.

Question for group

Take a moment and talk about a circumstance you have where you feel shortchanged. How are you currently overcoming that obstacle to still have a spirit of excellence?

EXCELLENCE IS MY SPIRIT BECAUSE THE REWARD FOR FAITHFULNESS IS MORE (You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things)

The way of Christ is to provide more (more resources, more promotion, more responsibility) when we have demonstrated we are first capable of being faithful with what He has currently give us.  This is the exact opposite mentality of our culture, which embraces self promotion and getting ahead no matter what the cost.

So often, we grow frustrated with our lack of upward movement and forward momentum when the solution is lying right in front of us in the form of a small, menial task that Christ just wants us to be faithful with.  Are we willing to recognize the areas of faithfulness that exist all around us and execute a spirit of excellence as if unto Christ.

Question for group

What are the small areas in our lives that we are called to be faithful in?
