DISCUSS THE CALL TO ACTION

HONOR: TREATING SOMEONE BASED ON YOUR VALUES, NOT THEIR CHOICES OR CIRCUMSTANCES
We live in a reactionary culture that asks us to treat people based on how they treat us. If people treat us poorly, we tend to shrink back and withhold honor. If people treat us well, our tendency is to show more honor. This is not the way of Christ. Our values drive honor, not any other external circumstance.

Read

1 Samuel 20:1-4
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.” But David vowed again, saying, “Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thinks, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.” Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you say, I will do for you.”

Main Idea

Jonathan and David had an honoring friendship despite awkward and uncomfortable circumstances. Jonathan was the son of King Saul. David, due to Saul’s disobedience, had been anointed future king of Israel. Jonathan should have been jealous of David for taking his throne and David should have been distrustful of Jonathan purely due to his blood relationship with the king. Instead, they had a deep friendship that was based on honor and respect. In the story above, Jonathan and David navigated one of their most uncomfortable situations. King Saul was trying to kill David but had not told Jonathan. David, desperate for his life, went to confront Jonathan to see how much he knew and if he had any involvement in the plot. What had the potential to be an explosive argument was instead turned into a conversation grounded in honor. Their conversation sets an example for us, as we can make a constant choice to treat every person and situation with honor. As we make these steps, we can truly say without reservation that honor is my calling.

Question for group

What does our competitive nature tell us about honor? What does it tell us about trusting God’s plan? How does it affect how we rest?

HONOR IS MY CALLING BECAUSE TELLING UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH TO YOUR FACE IS BETTER THAN SPREADING UNBALANCED RUMORS BEHIND YOUR BACK (…..came and said before Jonathan)

Question for group

What do you feel are the long term consequences of rumor spreading behind someone’s back? How about truth telling to someone’s face?
