THIS IS A TEST PART 2 – THE TEST OF THE FAMILIAR
DISCUSS THE CALL TO ACTION
DISCUSS THE CALL TO ACTION – JUST BECAUSE IT IS FAMILIAR DOESN’T MEAN IT IS GOD’S BEST
While God constantly showers us with His blessings, we can easily fall into the trap that God’s ultimate plan for our lives is to live in comfort and peace all the time. We can mistakenly view that if situations and circumstances call for us to be uncomfortable and to walk in the unfamiliar then God must not be in it. This is simply not true as God will bring us to moments that are unfamiliar to grow our faith and to show us how big He is. If we are willing, we can pass the test of the familiar and see God at work in all circumstances.
Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went.
Without warning and with very little details, God interrupted Abram’s normal life and routine. God asked Abram to leave his place of familiarity and comfort to pursue a future that was full of promise but that was also full of the unknown and peril. Abram decided to trust God and step into the uncomfortable unknown.
If we are to follow God’s promises for our lives, we have to settle the fact that God does not exist so we can flounder in full comfortable circumstances. Instead, He will bring us to moments of faith where He asks us to leave our comfort, embrace the unknown, and trust Him to lead us and guide us. These moments are scary, beautiful, nerve-wracking, and bold. But God will use everything to bring about His promise in our lives to completion.
THE UNFAMILIAR IS INEVITABLE
God has a plan for all of us. His plans are never easy. While all of us go through seasons of comfort and peace in our circumstances, it is only a matter of time before God will begin to ask us to step out of what we know as comfortable. Just like Abram, God does not ask us to step into the unfamiliar because He wants to harm us. More than anything, however, God wants us to keep growing in our faith so every one of His promises for our lives come true. Who we are, and what God wants to accomplish in us, is way more important that temporary comfort. We can be encouraged knowing that God has a plan for every season, especially in the ones that are unfamiliar.
Question for group
Talk about a time where you stepped into the unfamiliar. How did it stretch and grow your faith? How does it encourage you to step into the unfamiliar now?
THE UNFAMILIAR IS UNCOMFORTABLE
When Abram followed God, He did so with very little details. One of the lies that we can believe is that God will make every part of our unfamiliar journey easy. Just because God called you to it does not mean it will automatically be easy. Discouragement can set in when we follow God and mistakenly think that the road he leads us down will be full of happiness and circumstantial joy. Abram, when he followed God, walked through many trials and many difficult circumstances but he found God to be faithful through it all. One of the goals God has when we step out into the unfamiliar and circumstances become uncomfortable is to show us how big He is and how His Promises ring true no matter what we face.
Question for group
Talk about how we see God, as well as ourselves, different when circumstances are uncomfortable. How does the stretching of our faith cause us to see God more clearly?
THE UNFAMILIAR HAS AN IMPACT
God didn’t ask Abram to step out on faith for just simple reasons. No, God wanted to use Abram’s step of faith to make an impact on generation after generation. The steps of faith that we take to follow God, even when they are unfamiliar and uncomfortable, do not just strictly impact our lives. But the decisions we make impact our friends, our family, our co-workers, and others that we may never even realize. For those who truly want to make an impact, we must embrace the unfamiliar circumstances when God brings them our way.
Question for group
Who is it that you are believing your decisions to embrace the unfamiliar will impact?
